Do metal speaker grills affect sound?

Assuming the fabric is taut on the frame, the fabric interferes very little with the sound. Most grille fabrics are acoustically transparent and generally do not affect the sound in an audible or even barely measurable way.

There may be some slight sound differences when the grille is removed, but they're very slight at best, and it comes down to a value decision between safety and sound.
